The core is the innermost layer of the Earth, extending from a depth of about 2,900 km to the center of the Earth at about 6,371 km. Composed primarily of iron and nickel. The core is divided into the outer core (liquid) and the inner core (solid). The movement of the liquid outer core generates the Earth's magnetic field.

Rapid cooling gives rise to fine grained rocks, while slow cooling gives raise to larger grained rocks.
